Overview
Stemming from research at the USC GIS Research Laboratory,
WebGIS offers a number of free, web-based services.
These services are provided to the greater research community
to assist in creating the fundamental basis
for geospatial-related research, geospatial data.
While many web-based and/or PC-based services/programs
are available for creating and manipulating geospatial
data, WebGIS offers
direct access to the latest cutting edge research
on geocoding, address parsing, normalization
and standardization, and open source geospatial mapping
and visualization.
Established: 2007
While the research components upon which WebGIS is
based represent the output of
numerous ongoing research projects over the course of several years, the
WebGIS site which exposes their functionality was initially
created in the summer of 2007.
The first iteration was created in response to a need for a web-based
interactive geocode correstion tool. As usage increased,
requests for access to the latest research tools also increased,
resulting in the creation of the
service-oriented site you see now. The present version of WebGIS
is meant to function as an interface to the latest research advances being made
by researchers in the USC GIS Research Lab.
Location: Los Angeles, California
The USC GIS Research Lab is located on the fourth floor of
Kaprielian Hall at the eastern edge of the
USC Univerisity Park Campus, just a few blocks from downtown Los
Angeles. The open and dynamic environment of the GIS Lab
combines the best ideas from researchers in the fields of
Geography, Computer Science, and Health, resulting in a cross
fertilization of ideas and computational tools.
Under the leadership of its founding director,
the USC GIS Research Lab has consistently been a source
for state-of-the-art geospatial research and practice,
receiving numerous grants and contracts to serve the needs
of the academic, government, and commercial communities in
a variety of research fields. Dr. Wilson's vision of
a comprehensive, dynamic, and inclusive research environment
is what led to the creation of the USC WebGIS site.
Mr. Goldberg is the chief architect of the WebGIS site, and is
the lead researcher in charge of the underlying components upon
which it is built.
